Abstract
In many clinical/medical biochemistry laboratories the urea and electrolyte (U & E) profile includes an assay of plasma/serum bicarbonate concentration ([HCO3-p. Although the blood gas-calculated [HCO3-1 usually approximates fairlly closely to the U&E-measured [HCO3-1 that is not always the case. The extent and cause of discordance between measured and calculated [HCO3- I has been the subject of controversy for nearly 30 years.
