Abstract
A retrospective study was carried ma in Salters Hasan Memorial Hospital, Goma, Mana jga. from July2001 to June 2005 to assess the safely of surgery in a remote trout setting, and to present an audit of due 001100 and outcome of the surgery' and their complications. A total of 3431 patients were seen in outpatient and 613 different operations were dose during the period Most common operation was open thokeystectomy 14141%) followed by herniorrhaph• (13.70%), excision of benign skin and .111b......5 lesions (13.38%1 and appendicectomy 0123%1. Most of the of were elective (8548%). General anaesthesia was given in 51.88% cares. Overall complications ill open cholecystectontv. appendicectomy and hetnirrhaphy wne 6.21% Only two major binary complinallons (0.77 %I we're observed Skin and soft tissue infection (SSD rate in open cholecystectonrn appendireonny mid herniorrhaphy were 1.92%, 2.38% and 5.33% mpectively. No mortality was observed. Overall data suggest that .surgical care can be given satisjilmorily in mural setting with satisfactory results provided appropriate facilities and relevant expertise can be made available.
